Meet Ken Wollberg, Violin Teacher in Carbondale, IL

Ken Wollberg has spent more than five decades helping students learn, grow, and connect with music. Today, he brings that experience to Heart Strings Music Studio, providing personalized violin instruction in Carbondale, IL. His approach combines extensive musical education, Suzuki teacher training, and a genuine love of teaching to help each student make meaningful progress.

A Lifelong Journey in Music

Ken began violin lessons at age nine in Omaha, Nebraska, where he participated in junior orchestra, high school orchestra, all-city orchestra, and pit orchestras for musicals. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Concordia Teachers College in 1972 before pursuing advanced study in viola. He studied with Gerald Stanick and Bernard Zaslav and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in viola from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1980.

Ken also attended the Aspen Music Festival in 1979 and 1980, studying with violist Guillermo Perich. He later studied with William Preucil at the University of Iowa, earning a Master of Fine Arts in viola in 1987. Further study with Perich at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign continued through 1990, when Ken shifted his focus fully to teaching.

A Teaching Career Spanning More Than 50 Years

Ken began his professional teaching career in 1974 with Milwaukee Public Schools. Over the years, he has taught in public schools, private studios, community programs, Suzuki programs, continuing education, and music camps. His career took him to Seoul, South Korea, where he taught privately and through the Life & Culture Center of Saebyuk Church. He also taught at Korean Suzuki Association summer and winter camps.

Extensive Suzuki Teacher Training

Ken completed extensive Suzuki teacher training, primarily through the American Suzuki Institute in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, covering violin Books 1–7, 9, and 10.

The Suzuki Method, also known as Talent Education, is based on the belief that musical ability can be developed through the right environment. Listening, repetition, encouragement, and consistent practice play important roles in that process.

Ken draws on these principles while adapting instruction to the individual. The aim is to develop sound technique and musicianship while encouraging qualities such as concentration, patience, perseverance, confidence, and expression.

Heart Strings Music Studio

Ken established Heart Strings Music Studio in Carbondale in 2014 as a place for focused, individualized music instruction. The studio welcomes children, teens, and adults, from first-time beginners to intermediate and advanced musicians. Lessons are shaped around each student's current ability, learning style, and goals rather than a rigid, one-size-fits-all program.

For beginners, that may mean establishing posture, bow control, listening, rhythm, and other fundamentals. More experienced musicians can focus on technique, repertoire, expression, and continued musical development. Adults are welcome whether they are starting for the first time or returning to an instrument they once played.

More than five decades after he began teaching, Ken continues because he loves music and enjoys helping students discover what they can accomplish.
